Parents Sponsorship

It's not easy to leave your parents on the other side and move abroad. One of the goals of the Canadian government is to ensure that Canadian families can be reunited. After spousal sponsorship, grandparent and parent sponsorship is the second largest immigrant stream among family class immigrants.

In 2017, the Government of Canada introduced a new application process for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) has decided to randomly select 10,000 applicants from Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to support their parents or grandparents as sponsors in Canada. Additional questions were added for the 2018 release to help potential sponsors self-assess their eligibility against the minimum income requirements.

While the parental immigration program may not be an option at this time, you may consider temporary residency programs such as Super Visa and Visitor Visa.

If you are invited to apply as a parent or grandparent sponsor, you must submit your complete application package by the deadline indicated on your invitation. Once you have been approved as a sponsor and your parents have passed the eligibility assessment, they will immigrate to Canada.

Note that there is only one attempt to send the application package. Given the long processing times for applications, it is important to avoid mistakes that can lead to further delays and even denials. Save time - Hire an immigration consultant to help and guide you through the process.

Parents and Grandparents

Sponsorship 2021 timeline

Interest To Sponsor

Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship pool will open on September 20, 2021. Interest to Sponsor form must be submitted within the specified deadline (2 weeks). Those who expressed an interest to sponsor in 2020, but were not invited to apply, may be considered in the upcoming PGP 2021 lottery draw.

Lottery

After PGP pool closes, IRCC will review the submissions and remove duplicate entries. They will randomly select and invite potential sponsors to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents. If you didn’t receive invitation (see lottery results), you may consider Visitor Visa or Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents.

Results

IRCC will email the randomly selected potential sponsors and invite them to apply. Everyone who submitted an interest to sponsor form got a confirmation number. Make sure to check the same email account you used on the submission form. Also, lottery results will be posted on IRCC website.

Apply for PR

If you’re selected to apply, you must apply to become a sponsor and your parents and grandparents must apply for permanent residence. You must submit the applications before the deadline specified in your invitation. Additional Information about forms, fees and processing time can be found below.
